Siding Materials Compared: Fiber Cement vs Wood vs Engineered Wood in LA

The short answer for most LA walls

Choosing siding in Los Angeles is not the same decision it is in Ohio. Sun, not freeze-thaw, is what destroys a wall here, and in the hillside and canyon neighbourhoods the wildland-urban interface rules narrow the field before aesthetics get a vote. This guide compares the three cladding families we stock most — fiber cement, solid wood, and engineered wood — on fire performance, maintenance, and how each one actually behaves on a SoCal wall.

Fiber cement is the default recommendation for a Los Angeles exterior, and the reason is fire. It is a non-combustible mineral product, which makes the WUI and Chapter 7A conversation straightforward instead of a research project. Solid wood is the choice when appearance is the point and the property is outside a hazard zone. Engineered wood sits between them: the look and workability of wood at a lower weight, with a treated substrate that resists the moisture and insect problems that plague raw wood.

That said, the decision is rarely made on one axis. Weight affects framing and labour. Board length affects seams. Fastener metallurgy affects whether the wall streaks in five years. The sections below take each one in turn.

Fire performance and the WUI question

If your parcel is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, exterior wall covering has to meet Chapter 7A of the California Building Code. Non-combustible cladding satisfies that requirement on its own terms; combustible cladding has to be part of a tested assembly, which is a slower and more expensive path. This is the single biggest reason fiber cement dominates hillside rebuilds in Los Angeles. It is also why a beautiful clear redwood elevation, which is a legitimate and durable choice on a flat lot in Culver City, becomes a difficult one on a ridge above Sunland.

Two things that table cannot hold. Second, weight: a 12 ft fiber cement plank is a genuine two-person carry, and that shows up in labour hours on a tall elevation in a way it never does with engineered panel.

Fiber cement: planks, panels and shiplap

Within fiber cement the choice is really about the seam pattern you want to see. Lap siding gives the traditional horizontal shadow line: the 5/16 in. x 8-1/4 in. x 12 ft. primed Cedarmill plank is the workhorse, with an embossed wood grain that reads as painted wood from the street. Panel products cover ground faster and suit modern elevations — the 4 ft. x 8 ft. primed smooth panel for a flat contemporary face, or the Sierra 8 grooved panel where you want the board-and-batten rhythm without battens.

All of these arrive primed, not finished. Primed means paint within the manufacturer's window, and it means the back-priming and cut-edge sealing that installers skip when they are behind schedule.

Solid wood: cedar, redwood and pine

Wood siding is chosen for how it looks and how it ages, and in Southern California it can last a very long time when the species is right. Cedar and redwood carry natural extractives that resist decay and insects without treatment, which is why they are the two species worth paying for here — our note on cedar and redwood lumber covers the grades.

Profile matters more than most people expect. A 1/2 in. x 4 in. clear-A redwood bevel sheds water by geometry, with each course lapping the one below. Tongue-and-groove profiles like the 1 x 6 redwood V-joint resawn or the 1 x 6 cedar tight-knot V-joint give a tighter, flatter wall and run vertically as readily as horizontally. The honest downside is the maintenance clock. Los Angeles sun is hard on film finishes, and a south or west elevation will want attention years before a north wall does. Budget for refinishing as a recurring line item, not a one-time cost.

Engineered wood: the middle path

Engineered wood siding is wood strands or fibres bonded with resin and treated for moisture and termite resistance, then pressed with a grain texture. The 3/8 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. treated panel in cedar texture covers a wall quickly, takes a nail without pre-drilling, and weighs a fraction of what fiber cement does over the same area.

It is still a wood product, so it is combustible and the cut edges are the vulnerability — every field cut needs sealing before the panel goes up, and the bottom edge needs its clearance above grade. Treat those two details properly and it is a durable, fast, good-looking wall. Treat them casually and the failures start at the edges within a few seasons. What goes behind and what holds it on

No siding material is a water barrier by itself. Fasteners are where cheap jobs reveal themselves. Fiber cement and cedar and redwood all react with plain steel, and the result is a rust streak under every nail head. Stainless is the safe answer, especially near the coast: the 3d marine-grade stainless siding nail is the one to use on redwood and cedar and anywhere within reach of salt air.
