Copper Pipe Types: M vs L vs K for Los Angeles Plumbing

Copper tube is sold in three pressure grades — Type M, Type L and Type K — and they all share the same outside diameter. The only thing that changes is wall thickness, and that single variable decides where each type is legal, how it behaves under LA's hard water, and how long it lasts buried in soil. Here is how to pick the right one for the job in front of you.

The short answer: L for most Los Angeles work

Type L is the default for residential and light commercial repipes across Los Angeles County. It has a heavier wall than Type M, which buys you corrosion margin against the mineral-heavy municipal water most of the basin receives, and it is accepted in a wider range of applications under the California Plumbing Code. Type M is thinner and is generally limited to above-ground interior water lines where local amendments allow it. Type K is the heaviest wall of the three and is what you want for buried water service between the meter and the building.

All three are marked and color-coded so they cannot be confused on a jobsite: Type M is red, Type L is blue, Type K is green. The stamp runs the length of the tube, so an inspector can read it after the wall is closed up.

Why wall thickness matters more than it looks

Because outside diameter is identical across all three types, every fitting, valve and hanger you already own works with any of them. What changes is the inside diameter and the metal left between the water and the outside world. A thinner wall means slightly higher flow for the same nominal size, but it also means less material to lose before a pinhole forms.

That trade matters here specifically. Much of the water delivered across the LA basin is comparatively hard, and older neighborhoods with aggressive water chemistry have a long history of pinhole failures in thin-wall tube. When a homeowner in Pasadena or the San Gabriel Valley is repiping because the last system failed, the extra wall in Type L is the cheapest insurance in the whole job.

Where Type M still makes sense

Type M is a legitimate product, not a downgrade to avoid. It is designed for above-ground potable water supply, and on interior work in a building with benign water chemistry it performs for decades. Type M copper pipe is the practical choice for adding a fixture branch, running a line to an ice maker, or replacing a short damaged section in an existing Type M system — mixing wall thicknesses in one system is fine as long as each section meets code for its location.

Where Type M is a mistake: anything underground, anything inside a concrete slab, and anything your local amendment specifically excludes. Confirm with the plan checker before you buy, because the amendments vary between the City of Los Angeles, unincorporated county areas, and the smaller cities inside the basin.

Where Type K earns its keep

Type K is the heavy-wall grade used for water service lines, underground runs, and any application where the tube is buried or otherwise unserviceable. If the pipe will be under a driveway, under a slab, or in soil, the thickest wall is the right answer — the difference is trivial compared to reopening the trench.

Soldering, pressing and the fittings that connect it

The type of tube does not change how you join it. Sweat fittings work on Type M, L and K alike, and press fittings do too. What changes is the working conditions on your jobsite.

A 1/2 in. bronze press coupling installs in seconds with a press tool, needs no flame, and therefore no burn permit and no fire watch — a meaningful advantage when you are working in an occupied building or inside a very high fire hazard severity zone where open flame on site creates real exposure. Supporting the run correctly

Copper expands and contracts noticeably with temperature, and an unsupported hot line will tick and bang inside a wall for the life of the building. Support spacing requirements are in the plumbing code, but the practical rule is to strap horizontal runs regularly and let the tube move slightly rather than clamping it rigid.

Use copper straps on copper tube — a 1/2 in. copper pipe strap is compatible with Type L, K and M and avoids the galvanic pairing you get from mixing metals at the hanger. Pairing dissimilar metals at a support point is a slow, avoidable corrosion problem.

Isolating the system

Whatever type you run, plan your shut-offs before you sweat the first joint. A repipe is the one moment when adding an isolation valve at each branch costs almost nothing, and it is the difference between shutting off one bathroom and shutting off the whole house for the next twenty years of service calls.

Order by nominal size, not measured outside diameter — a 1/2 in. copper tube measures 0.625 in. across the outside, and that catch trips up people cross-shopping against PVC.
