Respirators, Dust Masks & Work Gloves: Silica-Safe PPE for LA Job Sites

Cutting concrete, chasing a block wall, sanding drywall, mixing mortar — every one of those tasks puts respirable crystalline silica in the air, and the particles that do the damage are too small to see or feel. A paper mask off the shelf is not the same product as a NIOSH-rated respirator, and the rating letters on the box mean something specific. This guide covers what to buy for the dust you are actually making, how to tell the ratings apart, and how to match glove cut levels to the work.

Why silica gets its own rule

Concrete, block, brick, mortar, stucco, tile and engineered stone all contain crystalline silica. Cut, grind or drill any of them dry and you generate respirable particles that lodge deep in the lung; the health effects are cumulative and there is no treatment that reverses them. That is why Cal/OSHA regulates respirable crystalline silica specifically rather than lumping it in with nuisance dust.

The permissible exposure limit is 50 micrograms per cubic metre averaged over eight hours, with an action level at 25. Those numbers are small enough that a few minutes of dry cutting can matter, and they are why the control hierarchy puts water and vacuum first. Wet-cut, use a shroud and a HEPA-rated vacuum, keep the saw outdoors when you can — a respirator is the last line, not the plan.

The compliance piece people miss: if respirators are required for the task, an employer needs a written respiratory protection programme, medical evaluation, and fit testing, and a tight-fitting respirator will not seal over a beard. The mask is the cheap part of that.

Reading the rating: N, R, P and the number

The letter describes oil resistance, not particle size. N means not resistant to oil. R means somewhat resistant. P means oil-proof. The number is filter efficiency against the test particle — 95 means at least 95 percent. For construction dust, N95 is the workhorse; the R and P grades exist for solvent, paint and cleaner aerosols.

The last column is the one that gets ignored. No particulate filter of any grade removes gases or vapors — solvent fumes, adhesive off-gassing and carbon monoxide need a cartridge respirator, not a filtering facepiece. And a plain dust mask is a comfort item for coarse debris; it is not silica protection and should not be treated as such.

Choosing an N95 for the task

Within N95 the differences are about comfort and fit, and comfort is what determines whether the mask stays on for the whole cut. A valved model vents warm, moist exhaled air, which matters on a hot LA afternoon: the 3M 8511 with the Cool Flow valve uses advanced electrostatic media to capture airborne particles with an adjustable nose clip for a custom seal, and it is the common pick for drywall sanding and floor work. The 2-pack of the same 8511 suits a one-day job.

Unvalved models are the choice when you also need to protect the space around you — the valve exhausts your breath unfiltered, so it is the wrong pick in a clean room or around a vulnerable occupant. Fit is the whole thing

A respirator that leaks at the edge is a rated filter delivering unrated protection, because air follows the gap. Mould the nose clip with two hands, not a pinch. Put both straps where the manufacturer shows them — one above the ears, one below the neck — not both on the crown. Then seal-check: cover the mask, exhale, and feel for leakage around the edges. Facial hair at the sealing surface defeats all of this, and no strap adjustment fixes it.

Replace a disposable respirator when it is damaged, soiled, hard to breathe through, or when the seal will no longer hold. A mask hanging on a rearview mirror between jobs is done.

Gloves: match the cut level, not the price

Hand injuries on residential sites cluster around three causes — sheet metal edges, broken masonry and utility knives — and the ANSI cut levels exist to sort gloves for exactly that. Higher is not automatically better, because cut resistance and dexterity trade against each other, and a glove too clumsy for the task comes off.

For sheet metal, glass and demolition the Level 3 cut-resistant glove in 18-gauge knit keeps full mobility while adding puncture resistance evaluated to EN388, with a reinforced nitrile layer between thumb and index finger where wear concentrates. For general framing and material handling the Level 1 nitrile-dipped glove is enough, and the Level 2 polyurethane-dipped glove sits between them for finer work.

Two more categories earn their place in the truck. Cowhide leather gloves handle rough lumber and hot work better than any knit, and disposable heavy-duty nitrile gloves are what you want when adhesives, sealants or wet mortar are involved — the point is throwing them away, not washing them. Different work generates different hazards, and the useful way to stock is by task rather than by category.

Frequently asked questions

Is an N95 enough for cutting concrete?

An N95 is the minimum respiratory protection for respirable silica, and it is only adequate alongside the controls that come first — wet cutting or vacuum dust collection, ventilation, and limiting time in the dust. For sustained dry cutting, exposure assessment may show a higher level of protection is required.

What is the difference between a dust mask and a respirator?

A NIOSH-rated respirator is tested to filter a defined percentage of airborne particles and is marked with its rating. A nuisance dust mask carries no such rating and is intended for coarse debris. For silica, drywall dust or fiberglass, the rating is the point.

Can I reuse a disposable N95?

Across a shift, generally yes, if it stays clean, dry, undamaged and still seals. Replace it when breathing resistance rises, when it is soiled or wet, or when the straps or nose clip no longer hold a seal. Do not attempt to wash or disinfect a filtering facepiece.

Do valved masks protect other people?

No. The exhalation valve vents your unfiltered breath, which is why valved models are the wrong choice where source control matters. Use an unvalved N95 in those situations.

Which glove cut level do I need?

Level 1 for general handling and framing, Level 2 where you need dexterity with some protection, Level 3 for sheet metal, glass and demolition. Going higher than the task needs usually costs dexterity, and a glove that comes off protects nothing.

Do gloves matter when working with mortar?

Yes. Wet cement and mortar are strongly alkaline, and prolonged skin contact causes chemical burns that can develop hours after exposure without obvious pain at the time. Waterproof gloves, and rinse skin promptly if contact happens.
