Concrete Anchors Compared: Wedge vs Sleeve vs Screw Anchors

Wedge anchors, sleeve anchors, and screw anchors all fasten fixtures to concrete, but they are not interchangeable. The short answer: use wedge anchors for heavy structural connections in solid, uncracked concrete; use sleeve anchors for medium-duty loads and softer base materials like block and brick; and use screw anchors (Tapcon-style concrete screws) for light-to-medium fastening where speed and removability matter. How Each Anchor Type Works

All three anchors resist pull-out differently, and that mechanism is what drives their load ratings and best uses.

Wedge Anchors: Expansion Clip in Solid Concrete

A wedge anchor is a threaded steel stud with a small expansion clip at the tip. You drill a hole the same diameter as the anchor, drive the anchor in, and tighten the nut — pulling the stud upward wedges the clip against the hole wall with enormous force. Sleeve Anchors: Full-Length Expansion for Block and Brick

A sleeve anchor surrounds a threaded stud with a full-length expansion sleeve. Tightening the nut draws a cone-shaped end into the sleeve, expanding it along the entire embedment depth. Because the load spreads over a larger surface area, sleeve anchors are more forgiving in hollow block, brick, and lower-strength concrete where a wedge anchor's concentrated expansion could crack the base material. They trade away some ultimate capacity in solid concrete — which is why wedge anchors remain the pick for structural work.

Screw Anchors: Thread-Cutting Speed, No Expansion

Concrete screw anchors cut threads directly into a pre-drilled pilot hole — no expansion forces at all. That means they can be installed closer to edges, removed and reinstalled, and driven fast with an impact driver. Our 1/4 in. x 2-3/4 in. flat head Torx concrete screws are a jobsite staple for furring strips, electrical boxes, conduit clips, and bottom track. Hex head versions like the 1/4 in. x 3-1/4 in. hex head give better driver engagement for repetitive fastening.

Choosing by Project: The Los Angeles Angle

In LA, anchor choice is often driven by seismic requirements. Soft-story retrofit programs and foundation bolting on older hillside and pre-1980 homes call for engineered, code-recognized anchorage — that is wedge-anchor and cast-in-place territory, not screw-anchor territory. When hold-downs and tension ties are specified, wedge anchors are commonly paired with hardware from our Building Hardware collection, and new pours use cast-in-place 5/8 in. x 12 in. foundation bolts set before the concrete goes down.

For interior tenant-improvement work — anchoring steel stud bottom track, furring out a block wall, hanging strut for MEP — screw anchors win on speed and clean removal at demo time. For fastening into older brick or grout-filled block, where expansion force can blow out the material, reach for a sleeve anchor or a drive-style brick anchor instead of a wedge.

Sizing Rules of Thumb

Embedment drives capacity. As a rule, embed at least 4.5 anchor diameters into sound concrete, keep 5 diameters from an unsupported edge for expansion anchors, and size the anchor length as embedment plus fixture thickness plus nut and washer. When in doubt on a structural connection, follow the engineer's schedule — anchor diameter, embedment, and spacing are usually specified on retrofit plans.

Installation Tips That Prevent Failures

Most anchor failures trace back to the hole, not the anchor. Drill with a carbide bit sized exactly to the anchor specification, drill 1/2 in. deeper than the planned embedment, and blow or brush the dust out — dust in the hole is the number one cause of low pull-out values for screw anchors. Torque wedge anchors to the manufacturer's specification rather than "as tight as the impact will go"; over-torquing in weaker concrete starts cracks.
