The First Thing Your Inspector Checks
A joist hanger transfers the load from a joist into the beam or ledger it attaches to, replacing toe-nailing with a tested, rated steel connection. In practice, any time a joist can't rest on top of its support — deck ledgers, flush beams, stair headers, floor openings — a hanger is the code-compliant answer. Los Angeles inspectors expect hangers on every ledger-attached deck joist, and California's seismic requirements make rated connectors more important here than almost anywhere else: in an earthquake, gravity-only connections walk apart, while a properly nailed hanger holds the frame together.
The three hanger types, in plain terms
Face-mount hangers are the default choice for most LA framing. Here's how the three styles differ:
Face-mount
Nails drive through the hanger's flanges into the face of the beam or ledger. This is the workhorse style — models like the LUS26 use double-shear nailing, angling nails through both joist and header for more strength from fewer nails.
Top-flange
A flange folds over the top of the beam, carrying load by bearing rather than nail shear alone — faster to set and self-locating on the beam. Our LB28 covers 2x8 joists this way, common on floor systems with steel or engineered beams.
Concealed-flange
Flanges tuck behind the joist instead of spreading to the sides (LUC26Z, HUC44). Use these at the end of a beam or in a corner where there's no room for outward flanges — the finished look is cleaner, too.
Match the hanger to the lumber: quick reference
The model number tells you the size: LUS26 fits 2x6, LUS28 fits 2x8, and so on. Here are the models we stock most:

Sizing rule of thumb: the hanger should support at least 60% of the joist depth. A 2x10 in a hanger sized for a 2x6 will rack under load — go up a size, never down.
ZMAX or standard galvanizing? The treated-lumber rule
The Z in LUS26Z means ZMAX — roughly four times the zinc coating of standard G90 galvanizing. You need ZMAX any time the hanger touches pressure-treated lumber, because the copper in modern ACQ treatment corrodes standard zinc coatings surprisingly fast. Since nearly every deck ledger and joist in LA is pressure-treated, that means: decks get ZMAX, interior dry framing can use standard. Within a few miles of the coast — Santa Monica, Venice, the South Bay — salt air pushes the same logic: ZMAX at minimum, everywhere.
Sloped roofs and angled decks: slopeable and jack hangers
Standard hangers want a square, level connection. For rafters and angled framing we stock the LRU26Z slopeable U-hanger, which field-adjusts to the roof pitch, and left/right LSSJ26 jack hangers for hip and skewed connections. These solve the classic LA hillside problem — decks and additions that meet the structure at odd angles — without torch-bending a standard hanger, which voids its rating.
Nail it right or don't bother
A hanger is only as strong as its nailing, and this is the most common correction inspectors write up. Three rules: fill every nail hole; use proper joist hanger nails (#9 x 1-1/2 in. hot-galvanized) — never drywall or deck screws, which shear under load; and drive double-shear nails at the angle the hanger's holes dictate, through the joist into the header. Framing nailer clips generally don't fit hanger holes — hand-nail them or use a positive-placement nailer.
