Every stick of structural lumber on our yard carries an ink stamp, and almost nobody reads it. That stamp is the only thing standing between a delivered load and a framing inspection, because it is what tells the inspector the species, the grade and the moisture condition the engineer assumed when the spans were calculated. This guide explains what is printed on the stamp, what the grades we stock actually mean, and the three reasons a beam gets rejected on a Los Angeles job.
What is actually printed on a grade stamp
A grade stamp is a certification mark, not branding. It carries four pieces of information the inspector cares about: the agency that supervised the grading, the mill that produced the piece, the species or species group, and the grade itself. A fifth mark gives the moisture condition at the time of surfacing.
The species mark matters as much as the grade. Design values are published per species, so a piece stamped Douglas Fir-Larch and a piece stamped Hem-Fir are not interchangeable even at the same grade number. If the plans call out DF-L and the delivered bundle is stamped something else, the spans on the drawings no longer apply, and that is a correction notice whether or not the wood looks identical.
The moisture mark tells you what the piece will do next. S-GRN was surfaced green and will shrink as it dries in place. KD or S-DRY was dried to 19 percent or below before surfacing and moves much less. That is the difference between our green S4S stock and our kiln-dried stock, and it is the reason we carry both.
The grades we stock, and what each one is for
Structural framing lumber is graded on the size and placement of knots, slope of grain, splits and wane. Fewer and better-placed defects mean a higher grade and a higher allowable stress. Almost all of our Douglas fir framing falls into two bands.

Two things the table cannot carry. First, "& BTR" means and better: a bundle stamped #2 & BTR may contain #1 and Select pieces mixed in, so you are buying a floor on quality rather than a single grade. Second, the redwood grades are a separate system built around heartwood content and decay resistance, not around structural stress. A Construction Heart redwood 2x6 is the right material for a post base that sits in soil and the wrong material for a header, and the two systems get confused constantly because both use the word Construction.

Green versus kiln-dried, and why the stamp settles the argument
The same 2x4 exists on our racks in two conditions. Green S4S lumber is surfaced at a higher moisture content and costs less; it is entirely correct for exterior framing, temporary work and anything that will dry in place before it is closed up. Kiln-dried stock such as the 2x4x8 #2 & BTR kiln-dried Douglas fir has already given up most of its shrinkage before it reaches the wall.
That distinction earns its keep on interior work. A green stud that dries inside a finished wall shrinks across its width, and the drywall screws, the trim joints and the paint line all record it. Los Angeles adds its own wrinkle. Material sitting on an open site through a run of hot dry days behaves differently from the same bundle delivered into a shaded, closed shell, and lumber that arrives kiln-dried and then sits unwrapped in the sun for two weeks is not kiln-dried by the time it goes up. Cover the stack, keep it off the ground on stickers, and frame from it while it is still flat.
Why an inspector rejects a piece
Three things account for most framing corrections in the field, and none of them is about the wood being visibly bad.
The first is a missing or cut-off stamp. Grade marks are printed periodically along the length, so a short cut-off can genuinely lack one — but an inspector cannot verify a member he cannot read, and an unstamped beam in a structural location is a correction by default. Keep the stamped end where it can be seen until the frame is signed off.
The second is a grade or species mismatch against the drawings. If the plans specify #1 & BTR for a beam and the piece in place reads #2, the allowable stress the engineer used is not there. This is where substitutions made at the yard on a Friday afternoon come back on Monday.
The third is damage that changes the grade after delivery: notches and holes cut outside the allowed zones, splits opened at a bearing point, or a member that was dropped and cracked. Grading describes the piece as it left the mill, and cutting a plumbing notch through the tension edge of a joist voids it regardless of what the stamp says. Ordering to the stamp on an LA job
Order from the drawings, not from the rack. Read the species, grade and condition off the structural sheet before the call, because those three fields are what we pick from and what the inspector reads back. Where the plans call for something the yard does not carry in the length you need, engineered material is usually the answer rather than a grade substitution — our comparison of laminated veneer and parallel strand lumber covers where those belong.
Anything in contact with soil, concrete or masonry is a separate decision from grade. Finally, inspect on delivery rather than at framing. Check that the bundle carries the stamp you ordered, that the species mark matches, and that the moisture designation is what you paid for. Frequently asked questions
What does #2 & BTR mean on lumber?
It means the piece is graded number 2 or better, so a bundle can contain a mix of #2 and higher grades. Number 2 is the usual specification for residential studs, joists and rafters, and it is what most plan sets assume unless a member is called out specifically.
Is #1 lumber worth the upgrade over #2?
Only where the drawings ask for it. Number 1 carries higher design values and fewer or smaller knots, which matters on posts, beams and long spans. On a standard stud wall it buys appearance rather than capacity, and the money is better spent elsewhere.
What do the letters on a grade stamp mean?

Will an inspector reject lumber without a grade stamp?
In a structural location, generally yes. The inspector has no way to verify the design values of an unmarked member. Keep stamped ends visible and avoid cutting every mark off a run of joists.
Are Douglas fir and Hem-Fir interchangeable?
No. They are separate species groups with separate published design values, so spans calculated for one do not transfer to the other. If the plans call out a species, the delivered stamp needs to match it.
